Mental health disorders affect people with disabilities at a greater rate than in the general population and can significantly impact a person’s ability to participate and succeed at work and in the community. This presentation will identify common mental health needs those adolescents with developmental disabilities may have. Presenters will address signs to look out for and ways that mental health symptoms may present in people with disabilities. Presenters will describe behavioral supports that can be put in place to assist many individuals and prevent mental health concerns from impacting their work and community functioning. These include teaching the adolescent to recognize they are getting upset, teaching them to select and use an effective coping skill, developing a support plan, using schedules and visual prompts to prepare them for a routine change, and teaching new social communication skills using Behavioral Skills Training (BST). The presentation will also cover strategies for responding in a mental health crisis. Presenters will include case examples of how each of these supports are utilized successfully in their program.

1. Identify the symptoms of mental health concerns in their patients with developmental disabilities and recognize the impact.
2. Learn at least 2 preventative strategies to teach appropriate social and coping skills to all patients.
3. Develop a plan for how to respond when these individuals have a mental health crisis or situation.
4. Utilize strategies to improve communication among the healthcare team.
