Overview

This training is part of the Partners for Kids-Behavioral Health Education Series! Registration is intended for Partners for Kids providers. A Zoom link and further instructions will be sent closer to the actual training date.

Description: SAFETY is a youth and family centered cognitive-behavioral treatment that is informed by dialectical-behavior therapy (DBT). SAFETY, as 12-week treatment, is provided to youth and families after a youth has made a suicide attempt or engaged in repeated deliberate self-harm (e.g. cutting or burning self, serious banging of head). The goals of SAFETY include increasing safety, helping youth build lives that they want to live, and assisting parents and caregivers in supporting and protecting youth. SAFETY includes counseling and support aimed at decreasing access to potentially lethal/dangerous methods of suicide/self-harm (e.g. firearms, poisons, medicines, ropes, ligatures, etc.).

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify how to create a “Feelings Thermometer” with youth to aid in the youth and family’s understanding of escalation of emotions
  2. Create a developmentally-informed safety plan, drawing from information obtained during the feelings thermometer and strengths activities
  3. Conduct a cognitive behavioral fit analysis to inform treatment targets
  4. Become familiar with coping skills and strategies that promote safety from self-harm
  5. List ways to facilitate healthy communication between caregivers and youth to support safe thoughts and behavior
  6. Recall how to elicit youth and family strengths, statements that can mitigate suicidal thoughts and behavior

Accreditation
In support of improving patient care, Nationwide Children's Hospital is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC),  and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), to provide continuing medical education for the healthcare team.
