Overview

This training is part of the Partners for Kids-Behavioral Health Education Series! Registration is intended for Partners for Kids providers. A Zoom link and further instructions will be sent closer to the actual training date.

This series provides participants with the opportunity to learn from internal experts in the behavioral health field. Relevant behavioral health topics and evidence-based practice tools are presented in a monthly lecture format.

Session description: This is a ‘big Idea’ presentation, which is heavily influenced by article and presentation “There is no such thing as a bad boy: The Circumstances View of Problem Behavior” by Patrick Friman, Ph. D, ABPP. Dr Friman works for Boys Town in Omaha, and this discussion is based on the following idea and quote from Father Flanagan, the founder of Boys Town: “…no such thing as a bad boy, only bad environment, bad modeling, and bad teaching.” This presentation will go over ‘the circumstance view’ of behavior, how it is connected to principles of behavior analysis, and how taking this stance can allow us to have a more compassionate approach to care. Following this, participants will be able to apply this stance to multiple scenarios in their life, including with patients, co-workers, and everyone else.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Participants will be able to describe The Circumstances View of behavior, and how it differentiates from alternative views of behavior.
  2. Participants will be able to explain how taking The Circumstances View of behavior allows us to fulfill our ethical obligations and improve therapeutic care.
  3. Participants will be able to state how to extend the use of The Circumstances View to at least two different situations in their profession, and describe how they would respond differently to the individuals involved.
  4. Participants will state how reinforcement and punishment impact behavior over time.
  5. Participants will state the 4 common functions of all behavior.
  6. Participants will be able to utilize one strategy to help mitigate when caregivers/families who struggle to follow recommendations.

Accreditation
In support of improving patient care, Nationwide Children's Hospital is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC),  and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), to provide continuing medical education for the healthcare team.
