Overview

Adaptive Sports Medicine Day is a multidisciplinary educational program designed to advance the care of athletes with physical disabilities through expert-led lectures, keynotes, and interactive sessions. Topics span wheelchair biomechanics across the lifespan, screening and rehabilitation of wheelchair athletes, and prosthetic decision-making in pediatric and adult populations. The program also features two keynotes on athlete development and inclusive sport pathways, an interactive workshop on accessing adaptive equipment funding, and a multidisciplinary panel highlighting real-world perspectives on access and resources. This course equips healthcare professionals with practical strategies to support safe participation, optimize performance, and expand access to adaptive sports. The day continues with community participation in our afternoon educational sessions as well as an engagement fair for exploring and networking with adaptive sports organizations throughout our region.

IN PERSON AND VIRTUAL REGISTRATION AVAILABLE

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe fundamental principles of adaptive sports medicine across pediatric and adult populations.
  2. Integrate current evidence in biomechanics, rehabilitation, prosthetics, and motion analysis to improve health, performance, and participation outcomes in pediatric and adult adaptive athletes.
  3. Identify key differences between the pediatric and adult adaptive athlete influencing their use of equipment, injury patterns, rehabilitation, and training.
  4. Enhance interdisciplinary team performance in adaptive sports medicine, bridging research, clinical practice, and athlete experience, to optimize athletic participation for individuals with disabilities.
  5. Translate knowledge into practical strategies that promote safe, equitable, and sustainable adaptive sport participation.
