Overview
This presentation is a review of pediatric hematology disorders: ITP, aplastic anemia, bleeding disorders, nutritional anemia and thrombosis.

ANCC Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the pathophysiology of Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) and Aplastic Anemia.
  2. Recognize signs and symptoms of ITP (e.g., petechiae, bruising, mucosal bleeding) and aplastic anemia (e.g., fatigue, pallor, infections, bleeding).
  3. Prevent infection in aplastic anemia by maintaining strict hand hygiene, neutropenic precautions, and monitoring for fever.
  4. Discuss signs and symptoms, diagnosis and management of iron deficiency anemia.
  5. Identify patients at risk for development of iron deficiency anemia in those with an undiagnosed/underlying bleeding disorder.
  6. Review other nutritional anemias: B12, Folate, Zinc, Copper.

In support of improving patient care, Nationwide Children's Hospital is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC),  and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), to provide continuing medical education for the healthcare team.
