In this activity, attendees will explore the various types of decision-making supports along the support continuum, including SDM and guardianship, and learn how to distinguish between evaluations of competency versus capacity. Through case scenarios and discussions, participants will identify when an evaluation is necessary to determine appropriate decision-making support and gain insight into available community resources to assist individuals in these processes.

In this seminar we will review the basics of pediatric concussion including common post-concussion symptoms, expected recovery course, and how concussions are managed. We will discuss common psychological, behavioral, and cognitive implications of concussion. We will review evidence-based treatments for post-concussion syndrome and help providers understand when specialty care may be recommended.

This didactic session will provide education related to pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of psychiatric medications used to treat mood and anxiety disorders in children and adolescents. Specific medications will be discussed, including indications for use, side effects, and polypharmacy.

Many of our patients struggle to tolerate negative emotional experiences without feeling overwhelmed; as a result, they often rely on avoidant coping strategies, which may actually worsen their ability to manage big feelings in the long run. This presentation will target ways to help patients get “comfortable being uncomfortable,” reviewing how avoidant responses may intensify negative emotional experiences and secondary reactions through negative reinforcement. Attendees will gain an understanding of what culturally responsive adaptations within applied behavior analysis means, and how to apply these strategies and interventions into their practice. Examples will be provided with suggestions for modifications and strategies for providers to consider when working with culturally diverse families. A discussion of benefits and barriers to utilizing these strategies will also be discussed.

This training equips clinicians to navigate the complex territory of painful but valid client cognitions. Participants will learn to distinguish cognitive distortions from accurate distressing thoughts, apply radical acceptance to support client resilience, and integrate culturally competent, socially just approaches to cognitive work. Emphasis will also be placed on clinician self-awareness and self-care in emotionally demanding clinical contexts.

This program will discuss the history of racial trauma and how this relates to clinical work with families. Participants will further receive tips on how to approach this topic with families in session.

Clinicians often report lack of confidence in providing effective feedback. With the continued growth of training programs in Behavioral Health and increased number of training supervisors, continued practice and assessment is needed to increase supervisor competence.
