Overview
The purpose of the Summer Scientist Series is to expose young people (high school and undergraduates) to the scientific method and careers in medicine and biomedical research. Introduction & Population/Clinical Outcomes Science  - Session 1 - June 17 Basic/Discovery Science - Sessions 2-3 - June 24 & 7/1 - Laboratory-based research focused on understanding fundamental mechanisms of disease and normal development. It is typically conducted in a “wet-bench” laboratory setting and is focused on understanding biologic processes that occur at the cellular level. Translational Science - Sessions 4 & 5 - July 8 & July 15 - Research that aims to turn discoveries in the lab or clinic into new diagnostic or therapeutic interventions. It typically involves the initial development of a candidate new treatment, and then testing how the treatment works in various animal models of a disease. Clinical Trials & Outcomes - Session 6 - July 22 - Research that evaluates the safety and efficacy of new experimental treatments. It often progresses through distinct phases that begin with ensuring the safety of the new treatment, then evaluating its efficacy against a specific disease, then evaluating the effectiveness of the new treatment compared to any existing treatments. Research that is focused on understanding the natural history of diseases or predictors of various health outcomes of those diseases. It may rely on existing electronic health record data or collect prospective data on a defined group of patients. Population Health Research - Session 6 - July 22  Research on factors such as public policies or community-based interventions that influence the health status of population groups. It is typically conducted in a community including a mixture of healthy individuals, as well as those with a variety of health conditions.
