Overview

This conference is intended for students in the final semesters of an Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program or Physician Assistant program with an interest in careers in pediatric critical care settings as an advanced practice provider.

This hands-on simulation activity is designed for new to practice, or soon to be practicing, critical care Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) to gain exposure to chest tube placement, central venous catheter insertion, and endotracheal intubation. Through expert instruction, demonstration, and didactics using pediatric-specific equipment, participants will strengthen their knowledge of pediatric anatomy, procedural indications, and evidence-based techniques. Simulation scenarios provide opportunities to develop technical skills, improve confidence, and reinforce best practices for the safe management of pediatric patients requiring invasive procedures.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Apply evidence-based indications, contraindications, anatomy, procedural steps and complication management principles for central line placement, chest tube insertion, and endotracheal intubation in an acutely ill pediatric patient.
  2. Discuss proper procedural technique for central line placement, chest tube placement, and airway management/intubation using simulation models and skills lab while adhering to current safety and procedural best practices.
  3. Integrate procedural decision making, team communication and complication recognition during simulated acute care scenarios requiring vascular access, chest tube placement and advanced airway management.
