Overview
This module explores the meaning of empathy and its impact on patient quality care in healthcare. Through real patient stories simulated by NCH staff and through staff testimonials, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how every interaction with patients and families regardless of their primary language spoken affects their patient experience. This module encourages all staff members to recognize their role in fostering empathic, quality-focused, and patient-centered experiences.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Define empathy and its impact on patient experience in healthcare.
  2. Recognize how every member of the healthcare team, regardless of role, contributes to the patient experience, impacting the deliverance of quality care and best outcomes.
  3. Reflect on the simulated patient experiences and imagine how experiencing similar situations may impact your perspective on patient quality care.
  4. Improve communication and teamwork within the healthcare team and patients/families.
  5. Utilize available resources and learn tips to better communicate with patients/families through the use of interpreter services.

Accreditation
In support of improving patient care, Nationwide Children's Hospital is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC),  and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), to provide continuing medical education for the healthcare team.
