Overview

Please join us for the 2025 Ohio EMS for Children Conference focusing on the unique emergency care needs of children. Keynote speaker Marianne Gausche-Hill, MD, FACEP, FAAP, FAEMS, interim President & CEO at The Lundquist Institute will discuss pediatric readiness in the prehospital and general emergency department settings.  In the afternoon, she will give an update on her sentinel work in defining best practices in pediatric airway management. 

Additional subject matter experts will explore how best to provide high-quality emergency care for children. There will also be an Ohio EMSC Clinical Save Awards Program at lunch. Attendees can choose from emergency department, prehospital, or alternative tracks with tailored breakout sessions and workshops.

Target Audience

Healthcare personnel involved in the emergency care of children, including prehospital/EMS providers and emergency department staff including technicians, nurses, advanced practice providers and physicians.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Define Pediatric Readiness and explore its impact on pediatric outcomes in the emergency setting
  2. Identify strategies to improve Pediatric Readiness in the ED and EMS systems
  3. Define medical child abuse and describe critical interventions in the emergency setting
  4. Identify common child life approaches to emergency pediatric care
  5. Discuss barriers and appropriate interventions for the neurodivergent pediatric patient
  6. Discuss controversial topics in pediatric trauma care and apply recent evidence to clinical care
  7. Describe the legal aspects of involuntary mental health holds for pediatric patients
  8. Describe strategies for family communication in event of possible involuntary mental health holds
  9. Identify common environmental injuries and management in the pediatric population
  10. Discuss commonly missed pediatric orthopedic injuries and key interventions in the community ED environment
  11. Differentiate which pediatric orthopedic injury patients require immediate transfer to a higher level of care
  12. Develop a draft hospital evacuation plan with pediatric considerations for the learner's hospital
  13. Demonstrate the appropriate management/use of common specialized equipment required by children and youth with special healthcare needs on simulated patients
  14. Identify common pediatric emergencies by physical exam
  15. Perform critical initial steps in the resuscitation and stabilization of the neonate
  16. Define the role of the Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator (PECC), describe benefits of PECCs within their organizations, and discuss key activities of the PECC in improving pediatric readiness
  17. Improve communication among the healthcare team through improved collaboration on patient care plans
