This training is part of the Partners for Kids-Behavioral Health Education Series! Registration is intended for Partners for Kids providers. A Zoom link and further instructions will be sent closer to the actual training date.

Description: Dysregulated teenagers are often in desperate need of change to interrupt cycles of self-destructive behaviors, including self-harm, substance abuse, and suicidal behavior. However, many of these same teenagers resist these interventions and struggle to tolerate feedback from caregivers hoping to promote this change. This presentation will incorporate lessons and principles from dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) to promote the fine balance between accepting and validating patients while facilitating necessary behavior changes. Participants will learn specific distress tolerance skills to support their patients in accepting stressors they cannot change and building their capacity to safely outlast negative emotional experiences. Participants will have opportunities to practice these skills through case vignettes and role play exercises.

1. Describe the relationship between acceptance strategies and change strategies in supporting dysregulated youth
2. Articulate the role of distress tolerance skills in reducing unsafe behaviors
3. Learn specific DBT distress tolerance skills and applications to managing intense emotions
4. Demonstrate ability to introduce these skills to youth and families through role play practice.
