Overview
This symposium will provide information to our regional colleagues and our patients and families on current clinical trials and advances in the field of Disease Modifying Therapies (DMT), Stem Cell Transplantation (SCT) and Gene Therapy in Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). The aim of this symposium is to critically analyze and review the pros and cons of these newer treatments including curative options.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Review current and upcoming disease modifying drugs for SCD such as crizanlizumab, voxelotor, glutamine and others that are in the pipeline.
  2. Compare the different alternative donor (non-sibling) choices for HCT in SCD and recent developments in matched sibling donor transplant for SCD
  3. Discuss the advances in gene therapy for SCD
  4. Analyze the long-term effects of all available therapies including curative options; review current data on risk for malignancies and infertility in patient with SCD
