Dr. Stephanie TerMaath is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. For the past 30 years, her primary research focus has been on failure analysis of a wide range of materials and devices. She has developed new failure predictions methodologies, performed failure investigations, managed large testing efforts, created new testing methods, and advanced computational simulation of progressive damage. She applies this background in failure analysis to evaluate VP shunt failure and inform new designs with improved performance. Having undergone revision surgeries for shunt replacement and surgical complications herself, she fully understands the impact on patients and is dedicated to applying her engineering skills to improve this life-saving treatment.
