Gail Bagwell Professional Biography

Gail Bagwell DNP, APRN, CNS, FNAP, FAAN is a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) Neonatal Network and Clinical Instructor at Ohio State University College of Nursing.  In her role at NCH, she works with an interdisciplinary teams to provide consulting, education, QI services to referring hospital and their staff. 

Dr. Bagwell’s scholarship centers on her expertise of high-risk neonates and families, specializing in Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome and Safe Sleep.  Her doctoral work focused on improving breastfeeding rates for babies diagnosed with neonatal abstinence syndrome.  Her work in safe sleep for neonates has been at the local, state and national levels having edited the National Association of Neonatal Nurses Safe Sleep Guidelines. She has disseminated her work in these areas through presentations, videos, media and publications. 

She served on the National Association of Neonatal Nurses Board of Directors from 2015 to 2023 as a Director at Large and then President of the organization.   She is also a member of the Central Ohio Association of Neonatal Nurses, American Nurses Association (ANA), ANA-Ohio, Association of Women’s Health and Neonatal Nursing, Academy of Neonatal Nursing, Council of International Neonatal Nursing, National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists, Sigma Theta Tau, American Academy of Nursing and National Academies of Practice.   She has published in neonatal and medical textbooks as well as journals that are used internationally.  She has co-chaired committees at NCH, at the state and national level to improve neonatal health with interprofessional colleagues and worked with an interdisciplinary team to develop a NICU in Guyana. 

Dr. Bagwell received BSN from West Virginia Wesleyan College, MSN-Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist from the University of Cincinnati and DNP from Chatham University.
